This only covers about the first 40-50 odd pages of the 400-page book. If you think that was bad, the author has some bad news for you.

Elsa, a relatively inexperienced girl who had dreams beyond having kids and living a life her parents wanted, has to take care of a child, the father of who doesn’t even want her. Things take a turn when it is revealed that Elsa is expecting Rafe’s child and must now marry because Rafe has ‘ruined’ her.Įlsa and her father ride over to the young man’s town and after a ruckus and talks of converting to Catholicism, they accept Elsa into their home. The young man takes advantage of the clearly inexperienced girl and it is quite evident, that he only wants Elsa for her body. (Mild Spoilers Ahead)Įlsa’s Life changes when she meets a young man named Rafe on a quite rebellious life. We see her urge to accomplish something in life when she asks permission to study Literature and Arts to her parents, a request she is declined. She wants to be brave, feel pretty but every time she is shackled by the chains of her conservative family. We see at the beginning how alienated she feels from the rest of the family. The author introduces us to the character of Elsinore (Elsa) who has been born and brought up in a family that has learned to hate her.

It follows the Dust-Bowl Era, i.e an era where dust storms were very common and brought along with the droughts that plagued MidWest and Southern Regions of the Country. The Story is set during the times of the Great Depression in the United States. Get a copy of The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah here. She is known for her signature style of writing and also because all of her books have female protagonists. Both the books had helped Hannah to reach a wide audience and also gather a following. It also reminded me of my BookTube phase where I had heard the name The Nightingale, quite a few times in the recommendations. It’s shameful to admit that I came across Kristin Hannah’s writing via a Netflix show that was based on one of her books, i.e Firefly Lane.
